Publication of Cuban Voter Rolls Assures Transparency
Camaguey, Feb 17, 2005 (AIN) Over a half million voters in the central Cuban province of Camaguey began scouring initial voter registration lists on Wednesday after receiving extensive information on the upcoming April 17 municipal elections.
After elections officials made the registration data publicly available, citizens began reviewing the information to verify its accuracy, said Mayra Gonzalez Diaz, secretary of the Provincial Electoral Commission, in a conversation with the AIN news agency.
The election official explained that the correcting of lists will continue until March 17, allowing all Cubans time to identify any errors in the recording of names, identity card numbers, addresses, etc.
Gonzalez highlighted citizen participation in the process, which she characterized as transparent and informed noting the more than 5,000 people in Camaguey are actively involved in preparing for the balloting.
Throughout the province, 1,004 delegates to their respective municipal governments will ultimately be elected. Candidate nomination will take place in public assemblies starting February 24.
Cuban electoral law stipulates that there must be a minimum of two and a maximum of eight candidates for each electoral district. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes on April 17, a second round runoff election between the top two contenders will take place on April 24.
